Announcing a Natural Hydraulic Lime Plaster Workshop

Written by Andrew Morrison

woman plastering straw bale houseTransMineral USA is hosting a plastering workshop this fall, October 11 and 12, 2012. This is a great opportunity to learn the material from some of the best. Keep in mind that TransMineral USA is the sole US importer of Natural Hydraulic Lime, so they know their stuff. I don’t know exactly who will be leading the workshop, but I imagine he or she will be top notch and I expect Michel, the owner of TransMineral USA will be there as well. I highly recommend you attend this workshop if you can make it.

Here’s what they have to say in their workshop announcement:

While no special skills are required for the application of Saint-Astier Natural Hydraulic Lime, a good understanding of the material as well as hands-on application will greatly benefit all participants.

This two-day workshop will focus on the particulars of mixing and applying lime mortars, from base to finish coats. It will take place in Petaluma, CA on a private property where three small buildings have been prepared for the workshop.  This will allow participants to work in a real construction site environment.

It will also allow the participants to apply all three coats in only two days. This is a big deal because there is a 10 day curing time in between coats. Without the special set up of three different buildings in three different stages of construction, this level of learning would not be possible. (That paragraph was me. I thought it was important to point that out!)

Workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. both days and lunch will be provided.

October 11th:

How to mix NHL mortars properly
Application of scratch coat on pre-lathed walls
Application of brown coat on pre-scratched walls
Application of different standard finish coats on pre-browned walls

October 12th:

Completion and review of previous day’s application
Wall protection, curing and reworking
Finishing techniques: interior and exterior

$175.00 – Both days
$ 95.00 – One day
A 50% non-refundable deposit required.  Space is limited.

To make reservations, please contact us at [email protected] or give us a call at 707-769-0661. Please let us know where you heard about the workshop. Thanks.

  1. Really sounds like a good class ! But i wont be able to attend . Will there be other workshops / classes in the future ? Thank you . . . Jim

  2. Also ….. Would “Transmin , sonic” be interested in using our home for a workshop ? It wouldn’t be until sometime in 2014 ? Just thought i would ask while here at this site … Thank you Jim

  3. Hi Jim. It’s possible, but I doubt it. They need a project small enough to complete quickly and in three different stages to show all three coats. Remember that there is a 10 day cure time in between coats, so the structure would need a section with no plaster, a section with scratch and a section with the brown already applied.
