In the Host’s Own Words:

Welcome to Michigan!

Michigan straw bale workshop site 1

The workshop site where we will be baling a version of the Kozy Casa design!

We are so excited to share our community and straw bale project with you 🙂  Our build is located just 10 minutes north of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan and located about 1 hour west of Detroit.  It is also nicknamed “TreeTown” due to an estimated 1.48 million trees and 158 parks. The EPA named Ann Arbor a “Recycling Pioneer”, being one of the top 20 waste reduction communities in the United States.

Argo PondBetween our build and downtown Ann Arbor is the Huron River which fills out into Argo Pond, a terrific place to rent a kayak or SUP for an afternoon of paddling. There are hiking trails for miles in Nichols Arboretum and Matthei Botanical Gardens.  The Kerrytown farmer’s market is famous throughout the area for spectacular produce, meats and flowers on Saturdays and an artisan’s market on Sundays.

With the university community comes a diversity of restaurants and shops to choose from, see THIS visitor’s guide for more details.  As of 2015, Michigan ranked 6th in the nation for the number of craft breweries, and Ann Arbor is home to a number of them, including a new meadery downtown called Blom (“bloom”). More info on the beer scene click HERE.

Our property is a 2 acre parcel within 60 acres of agricultural intentional land, 10 acres of which is Sunseed Farm, a CSA run by our friend Tomm. Our next door neighbors are building a net-zero home with solar features and a Trombe wall.

There will be plenty of camping area available on site, as well as a covered outbuilding for shelter and shade during meals, and no chiggers!

Kozy Kasa straw bale house

We will be building an adaptation of the Kozy Casa

The build will be an off-grid 1,140 sq foot adaptation of Touson Saryon’s Kozy Kasa design. This home will have a loft and sunroom/greenhouse plus a basement for composting toilet containment and root cellaring (not in the same space 🙂 There will be a masonry stone heater to warm the radiant floor in addition to solar for electrical needs and passive heating.
