Beau and Stefani are two amazing folks that I got to spend a week with at my Texas workshop a couple years ago. They are creative, fun, and an all around great couple. They spent time filming the build process in Texas and used that video to inspire themselves and others on their website, Jar of Grasshoppers. If you want an insight into just how amazing these guys are, spend a little time on their website and see what they’re up to. I know you’ll have an amazing time with us in Oklahoma.
IN THE HOST’S OWN WORDS:
We had always talked about moving to the country, starting a farm, and building a straw bale home. We’d hoped it wouldn’t be one of those things we always talked about doing, only to look back on our lives and realize we had done too much talking and not enough doing. When we found ourselves without a home of our own in January of 2015, we stopped talking. It was time to start doing.
“The Twenty” is our up and coming oasis, an organic homestead in its infancy, located about 25 minutes east of Oklahoma City. After attending one of Andrew’s workshops outside of Austin, TX in 2015, we were determined to host a workshop of our own. And here we are! Our homesite is nestled in the heart of our 20 acres, aka “The Twenty.” We’re building an approximately 2,000 sqft. home for our soon to be family of four! Our home has been designed by a local architect, and will feature both direct solar and passive solar elements. The plot started out as 20 acres of nothing but trees, but we have been slowly transforming it into a small sustainable organic farm, and soon to be orchard, using permaculture techniques. Our little group of chickens provide us with farm fresh eggs, and our beehives provide us with honey! We’re striving to keep The Twenty as native as possible, and we’ve recently registered a portion of our property with the National Fish and Wildlife Service as Monarch Butterfly habitat. The building site will have many areas available for setting up tents, and there are multiple hotels in Oklahoma City within about twenty minutes.
Let’s be honest, you’ll probably have way too much fun at our workshop to even think about leaving the property. We’ll have a designated area for nightly campfires, and evening socializing is greatly encouraged. That said, Oklahoma City is experiencing a renaissance and should you find yourself with some extra time while visiting, there is plenty to see and do. Into museums? Our OKC Museum of Art is host to the largest permanent Chihuly exhibit, the OKC National Memorial and Museum offers a place for peaceful reflection, and the nation’s only Museum of Osteology is just a really cool place to look at lots of bones and skeletons! Pretty cool stuff, right? Enjoy eating delicious foods? Our food, coffee and craft beer scene is on the rise, with tons of amazing local restaurants and food trucks galore, brewery tours, and coffee roasting workshops available.
Enjoy the outdoors? With the arrival of our beloved NBA team, the OKC Thunder, downtown OKC has become the place to get out and be active. Our downtown botanical gardens and crystal bridge conservatory is a great place for a leisurely stroll. Our boathouse district is home to an official US Olympic and Paralympic training facility for rowing and canoe/kayak, as well as a massive climbing gym and RiverSport Adventure course with rapids, sky trails, zip line and more. OKC has a little bit for everyone!
Our experience at the Austin, TX workshop in 2015 was unforgettable. We made so many fast friends, many of which we still keep up with today. We sincerely look forward to meeting you, and making some wonderful memories together.
