About our property and house:
The 1.8 acre property, which we call SunCrest, is situated in an area known as Storm mountain at 7,000 feet. From county road 43, you will travel up Storm Mountain Road two miles ascending approximately 1,000 feet which opens into a large meadow and rolling hills. To the north is Spruce mountain, to the west Storm mountain and to the south Palisade mountain. Cedar Creek meanders through the meadow area.
The area reminds my wife of the movie, Sound of Music because of the beautiful views. The property is gently sloping with sandstone and granite outcroppings with veins of quartz. The ground is covered with mountain grasses, sage, and many wildflowers. There will be plenty of space for camping.
The home will be very unique, because straw bale construction is only one of several green building concepts that will be utilized. Our dream is to build an environmentally conscious, energy efficient, self sufficient home. It will be functional and beautiful, utilizing the power of the sun and earth to reach those goals.
The home will be approximately a 1,700 square foot one- level home. The home will have a contemporary Tuscan influence with arched doors and windows and exposed wood beams. There will be a large fireplace with an efficient wood stove insert. A modified post and beam framing will be used with straw bale infill.
The flooring will be stained concrete and is the heat sink for the passive solar design. There will be considerable natural light with this concept, and clerestory windows will illuminate the north side of the home. The home is being designed by architect Jeff Dickinson, known for straw bale and passive home design.
Air source heat pump technology will be used extensively for it’s extreme energy efficiency as the main heating source, as well as for the clothes dryer and water heating. There is no air duct system since there is no furnace or AC. Heat energy will even be saved from hot shower drain water via the EcoDrain water heat recovery system that transfers this heat to the incoming cold water inlet, reducing heating cost a further 20-30%. Water is supplied by a well, and will also be supplemented with a rain water collection system, which will be store that water in an underground cistern. The home will be all electric, and powered with a 6-7 kw grid-tied PV system.
The property will also have a small orchard of high altitude tolerant fruit trees including apple, nectarine, pear, and peach. Other future additions will be a water- conserving organic vegetable garden, greenhouse, and chicken coop.
Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind homebuilding experience. You will learn about the straw bale building techniques, as well as receive additional information about many other energy efficient technologies utilized here. We look forward to meeting you, making new friends and good food, and helping to make your workshop an enjoyable and memorable experience!
