Are you excited about the idea of living in a straw bale house but unsure of how to make your dream a reality (or are flat out terrified to even get started)? Join us at our Eugene, OR seven-day, hands-on workshop!

Our workshops are designed to meet the needs of both the novice builder and experienced contractor. Andrew’s grasp of construction technology, with over 20 years as a professional builder, comes through in his ability to explain each detail in a way that benefits all participants. Our goal is to prepare you with a truly well-rounded educational experience so when it comes time for your build, you have the confidence to handle anything that comes up from construction hiccups to personal stress management.

So, come and join us…we would love to have you with us! Our workshops are rewarding, engaging, highly informational, and an absolute blast! Truly, much, much more than just a workshop!!

We invite you to life changing experience and to help us build our straw bale dream home!

The Eugene workshop location sits atop a beautiful 50 acre property with stunning views!

Does spending a week camping, playing,  and working in a 50 acre wooded glen sound appealing? If you like the idea of learning new skills, meeting new people and enjoying the camaraderie of pulling together as a team and creating something special, all in the breathtaking outdoors of Oregon, then this workshop is for you.

The workshop will be located just south of the city limits of Eugene, OR. The city lies at the Southern end of the Willamette Valley adjacent to the beautiful Willamette River. Eugene and its surrounding areas offer a wide variety of both cultural and outdoor attractions. Eugene’s Saturday Market and Farmers Market, numerous hiking and biking paths, kayaking on the Willamette, and visits to local wineries are just some of the attractions to enjoy in and around town before and after the workshop.

The majestic Cascade Mountain Range and Oregon’s spectacular coastline are just an hours drive away and offer plenty of camping, backpacking, and sight seeing. There are several nearby grocery stores and restaurants in town that offer organic, locally sourced food if you want something special; however, we will be providing all of the meals during the week, so no need to shop unless you want to. If you plan to fly in, Eugene Mahlon Sweet Airport (EUG) is located just 20 minutes North of town and is serviced by Delta, United, American, Alaska, and Allegiant Airlines.

The view from the top of Spencer Butte Peak, whose trail head is just next to the workshop site

The lot is situated right next to the Spencer Butte Park trailheads. It’s comprised mainly of majestic oak, ash, douglas fir, cottonwood, and ponderosa pine with a small creek running through it. We also have apple, pear, and blackberry on the property that will be ripe for the picking at the time of the workshop! There is plenty of room for camping in a meadow adjacent to the building site that offers a spectacular view of Spencer Butte. We will also have limited space for RV parking; however, we are not able to provide hookups, sorry. There are local options nearby if you need those services.

Our dream home is a 1,900 square foot, slab on grade, shed roof design. It will have plenty of South facing windows to take advantage of passive solar heating in the winter and large overhangs to protect the bale walls from the abundant Oregon rain and to provide shade from the summer sun. We’ve designed a veranda that wraps around the West and South sides of the house that offers a shady place to sit and gaze out at the Butte in the summertime.

The house will be powered by a hybrid solar/on-grid power system and supplied by well water allowing us to be a bit more self-sufficient. There are an abundance of farms in the Eugene area providing baled straw, giving us the ability to source our material locally.

Your hosts, Rebecca and Britt 🙂

Our master plan is to design a permaculture community food forest surrounding the house and on other sections of the property that we hope will provide much of the food needs for its contributors.

We were fortunate enough to attend both Andrew’s 2019 Medford and 2020 Mt. Hood workshops. Both provided an abundance of knowledge and we’re really looking forward to helping Andrew provide you with the same! We really look forward to meeting you and making memories together. See you all in September!
