In the Host’s Own Words: A project description

If you’ve never been to the Temecula Valley in Southern California, you’ve been missing out. We moved here seven years ago from Chicago (we are both originally from the Czech Republic) and are so grateful to have the opportunity to host a strawbale workshop on our property. We instantly fell in love with the hills surrounding the Temecula Valley,  and we know you will too. The beautiful vineyards, amazing views, sunny weather, historic old town, and year-round farmers markets make this place like no other on the planet.

The location is perfect, one hour away from beautiful San Diego, 45 minutes from the beach, 1 hour away from the desert, 1,5 hour from the Big Bear mountains and Los Angeles and bunch of interesting places in between. Our 4.2 acre property is located in the wine country, 1 mile away from the nearest winery. There are over 30 wineries in the area, so if that’s your thing, there’s no shortage of tasting rooms for you here.

We’re building a 2000SF Spanish style straw bale house with solar panels, grey water and rainwater catchment systems, and a permaculture inspired garden. More than half of the house will be shaded with extended porch areas to keep us cool in the sometimes hot Southern California climate.

We were originally inspired to build a straw bale home by our friend and after dreaming about it for some time, we know that we’re ready to make that dream come true. We sold our house in the summer of 2017, moved to our motorhome, and immediately began designing our new house and permaculture garden. We’re so excited to share our vision with you and to work together to see that vision come to life!

There is plenty of space for camping and we’ll have an area for evening campfires and gathering. My daughter and I loved the nightly gatherings around the fire when we went to the workshop in Oklahoma last year, and we highly encourage the same level of fun and connection in our workshop.

We love to cook! Let me say that again…We LOVE to cook, and you’ll enjoy a lot of fresh homemade meals with ingredients from local farmers and hopefully from our own garden too. We are a husband and wife team raising an amazing 3 year old daughter. We’ve done many crazy and challenging things in our lives, and building a straw bale house is next! We were crazy enough to drive a car from Chicago to California with a minor side trip all the way to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Yes, 22k miles through Central and South America. After that trip, a bale house should be easy!

Please join us to help make our dream come true and be inspired to build your own dream house or to do many crazy and challenging things in the near future. Life is for having fun and experiencing all that you can. We hope you’ll come experience the next journey with us in Temecula.
